Laying the Keel

In 1864 Summerside was an emerging shipbuilding 'boomtown'. Many businesses were located on Water Street, between Granville and Central Streets. Their names are recorded on the Lake Map of 1863.

In recognition of these entrepreneurial pioneers, interpretive panels, each dedicated to a business operator, were researched at Summerside's MacNaught History Centre and Archives. The panels are located in proximity to the original locations of the respective businesses. Each panel has a map highlighting the location.

To see Laying the Keel in person, take a walk along Historic Water Street in Downtown Summerside, during the Summer and Fall months.
